Which of These 5 Coastal Cities Should You Move To?
Are you ready to move to the coast? Whether you’re looking to retire in a different location or you just want to experience another part of the country, begin your search by deciding what type of coastal lifestyle best fits you.
We’ve compiled a list of cities on the coast that might match your style and inspire you to pack your bags, let us pack up your house, and move.
For the Outdoor Enthusiast:
Seattle, Washington
Seattle is bordered by water on two sides, which means water activities like boating, kayaking, and sailing are popular activities. With its proximity to Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Snoqualmie Falls, and the San Juan Islands, you’ll also find plenty of hiking opportunities that only require a day trip or a weekend. Seattle has a total of 44 nearby state parks and 19 beaches, so the outdoor activities are nearly endless and up to you.
Average Seattle winter temperatures have highs in the upper 40s, while summer temperatures hang around 70 degrees. And, while the outdoor activities are aplenty, it frequently rains in Seattle, so make sure you don’t mind a bit of gray before moving there!
For the Budget-Conscious:
Gulfport, Mississippi
If you enjoy saving money, Gulfport is your coastal city. For the second year in a row, Gulfport has ranked as the No. 1 most affordable beach town in America. The median home value is $117,300 and residents spend around $926 on property taxes annually.
Gulfport has warm summers and winters, with winter highs averaging around the mid-60s and summer highs averaging around 90 degrees. If you’re still working, the average commute time is a relatively-low 21 minutes. Or, if you’re planning on retiring soon, you should know that Mississippi ranks as one of the best states for early retirement.
For the History and Museum Buff:
Washington, DC
Ready to be surrounded by great historical monuments and have easy-to-access museums nearby? Washington, DC is your place! DC is home to nearly all of the Smithsonian Institution Museums, with eleven being located on the National Mall and six more located inside the city. There are also many museums that are not associated with the Smithsonian, and DC is home to several national monuments. You’ll also find important political buildings for the US Government.
Winter will be a bit chillier than some of the other coastal locations with an average near 40 degrees, but summer temperatures have a nice average of 77 degrees!
For the Tropical-at-Heart:
Naples, Florida
If you like piña coladas, great sunsets, brilliant beaches, and ocean air, Naples is the place for you. Seated on the Gulf of Mexico, Naples provides the best of the beach life, offering access to stunning beaches both close to the city and within an hour drive at Marco Island or Sanibel Island. Naples also offers a variety of fun festivals and events, biking trails, golf courses, restaurants, and shops. If you’re feeling adventurous, you’re also a close drive to the Everglades.
Prepare to have a great winter with average highs around 75 to 80 degrees, and enjoy the tropical summers with average highs near 90 degrees.
For the Wine Connoisseur:
Santa Barbara, California
If you’re an avid wine fan, Santa Barbara might be the place for you. Located on California’s coast, Santa Barbara was named one of America’s best wine destinations. Plus, you can drive up to Napa County for a weekend trip if you’re searching for more wine events and experiences.
Santa Barbara also offers a variety of other benefits, such as average high temperatures in the winter around 65 degrees and summer highs around 75 degrees, nearby beaches, bike trails, and golf courses.
