How to Choose a Mover
Moving can be an overwhelming process, and every year approximately 3,000 American are affected by moving fraud. That’s why choosing a mover is such an important decision. Plus, with the right mover you can kick your stress and overwhelm to the curb. It takes some research and planning, but you can avoid moving scams and find a trusted partner that will make your move smooth. Here are our seven tips that will help you choose a mover!
1. Talk to A Trusted Advisor or Friend
A good moving company should have happy customers! You can talk either to your friends about who they have used locally or talk to local real estate agents or home improvement contractors to vet a potentially moving company you’d like to work with.
2. Make Sure Your Mover Has An Active License
To avoid being scammed and ensure your movers legitimacy, look for a U.S. DOT number on companies’ website. All moving companies should have active operating authority and adequate insurance. For instance, you can find our active U.S. DOT number at the bottom of the website.
3. Check the Business’s Credentials and Reputation
Once you’ve found a company you’re interested in and they say they are licensed, contact them and get their full legal name, DBA names, the number of years they’ve been in business, DOT and MC license numbers. With those, you can use website like protectyourmove.gov or SaferSys.org to make sure a company is licensed like they say they are.
To potential avoid scams, you can also check a company’s reputation with organizations like American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
4. Request an Estimate and Walk-Through
If you like a company you’re looking at, the next step is to request an estimate. You can do that for us by filling our our free request a quote form above. You should beware of estimates that are only given over the phone or internet without a visual survey. Reputable moving companies should comply with federal regulation that requires an in-home estimate.
For an in-home estimate, an estimator will come and do a walk-through to assess that costs. When the estimator comes, you want to go with that company that asks questions about what you will be taking from your current residence to your next and answers any questions that you may have. You don’t want to go with a company whose estimator quickly walks through without noting anything or asking any questions.
To schedule time with one of our estimators, use the request a quote form above.
5. Don’t Pay a Large Deposit
If things have gone great up to this point and the mover asks for a large deposit up front, you’ll want to consider finding another company. If you were to pay in advance, you lose control over when you’ll actually see your belongings again, and a large deposit could be a sign of fraudulent activity. Mayflower says that “legitimate movers should never ask for a deposit before moving your items.”
Let us earn your trust and do our best to make your move stress-free.
If you have upcoming moving needs, we would be happy to talk with you and give you an estimate. Simply request a quote using the form above, and we will be happy to walk through this process with you and earn your trust!
