Your Moving Day Checklist
Whether you’re moving across the city or to another state, being prepared for your moving day is important. We’ve put together a brief checklist of what your part will be on your big day while we handle the rest.
Be On Site
On your moving day, you’ll want to be on site to make sure that the truck is fully loaded with the items you want moved, and any items you don’t want moved are clearly marked and separate.
You’ll also be asked to tour your house or apartment, check and sign the inventory. Movers use an inventory to ensure that everything will arrive at your new place in the same condition in which it started. You’ll receive a copy of this inventory, and you’ll want to keep this safe.
Know Your Moving Paperwork
In addition to the inventory, your moving day will also involve these key forms:
- High-Value Inventory Form: this form states whether or not items of extraordinary value are included in the shipment.
- Bill of Lading / Freight Bill: this form states the terms and conditions under which your goods are moved. It is also your receipt for the shipment, so be sure to keep this someplace secure.
Keep Your Moving Paperwork Safe
Keeping these documents in one, safe place is important. You might need them in order to verify moving expenses when you file tax returns.
Communicate with Your Driver
Making sure to communicate with your driver is important. Before your driver leaves, you should:
- Verify your new address with the driver
- Give the driver your contact information (phone numbers) in case you are needed prior to the arrival of the truck
Take a Final Walkthrough
As you say goodbye to your old home, there are a few key questions you should ask yourself.
- Is everything shut off (water, furnace, A/C, lights)?
- Are the windows and doors all closed and locked?
- Do you need to leave your house keys somewhere?
