Move to Your Dream Retirement Destination With These 7 Steps
You’ve thought about this day for a long time. You bought or rented your dream place in your dream state and are ready for retirement! So, what does it take to actually move to your future favorite spot? We’re helping you move to your dream retirement destination with the following seven steps!
Step One: Decide if You Want to Use a Senior Move Manager or Manage the Move Yourself
According to A Place for Mom, a Senior Move Manager is a project manager who specializes in managing moves for seniors. They can help you figure out your new space, what items you’ll need, what you might want to give away, and more. As you begin to think about your move, decide how much you’ll want to handle yourself, and how much you might want to hand off to someone else.
If you’re ready to organize your own move and see the rest of the steps, keep going!
Step Two: Take Inventory & Pack Smart
The next step while you’re planning your big move is to figure out what furniture and items you plan to move. This process can be a big one, because it means thinking about your new space, thinking about what you might want to sell or give away in order to downsize before your move, and more!
One thing you can do during this time is create a “pack, purge, or donate system” (Updater). This can help you decide what you’ll be taking, what you’ll be selling or throwing away, and what you might consider donating to charity and claiming a tax deduction for.
Step Three: Choose Your Mover
With such a big and exciting move, of course you’ll want to feel confident that you’re choosing the right moving company! At Hogan Moving, we can assist you throughout the entirety of your move, from ideas and help with packing your belongings to the delivery of your items to your new home.
We are always in compliance with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which means we have:
- Motor vehicle insurance, liability insurance, and workers’ compensation
- An up-to-date registration
- A U.S. DoT number
Step Four: Decide on How You’ll Reach Your New Home
Here are some things you should think about as you get closer to your move:
- Are you driving your car to your new home?
- Would flying be cheaper?
- Will you need to ship your new car?
- Will it be more cost-effective to drive yourself or to have your car shipped and to fly?
Step Five: Pack
Pack the items that you have already chosen to keep and take with you to your new home.
You’ll want to pack your essentials separately and keep them with you, just in case it takes your belongings a little longer to reach you than expected. If you can, you might want to try and keep your most sentimental items with you. You’ll also want to make sure you have your important documents with you, like your moving papers, insurance information, your forms of identification and more!

Step 6: Transfer Your Utilities
Moving.com notes, “Before you move, be sure to contact your utility companies to let them know you are moving. Utilities include cable and internet, water and sewer, gas, electricity, satellite, and security system. If you already have an address in your new state, go ahead and schedule a transfer or installation date.” You might want to do this slightly before your moving date, so that you know for sure you’ll have everything you need.
