Moving to a retirement community
While it might not always seem it like, this is a very exciting time in ones life. Moving to a community of peers with lots of social functions and events can be just what your loved one (or you!) need. But, this is no ordinary move. Here are some things to look out for.
Planning
This is a bit of process. First, figure out a way to say goodbye to the old space. This could be a small celebration, dinner party, or some kind of ceremony. Once this is planned out, make sure to hire a mover. This will make the packing and relocating process much easier on both the movee and family members.
Take it with
When in doubt, keep it. If there is something that seems too difficult to get rid of just take it with. Don’t try to force letting go of something that you aren’t emotional ready for. Have a pile of old knit sweaters from childhood? Or maybe a pots and pans set from Mom and Dad? Keep it. You’ll find the room for those special pieces.
Furniture
This most likely will be a ‘take the basics’ situation. Take only the essentials: a dresser, couch, small table, end tables, and a coffee table. Double-check the lighting before moving in to see if you need additional lamps. To make things even easier, see if there is an option for a fully furnish apartment in the community. This could make the transition even easier.
Getting to know the staff
This is a new home so it’s important to feel comfortable. Getting to know not only your neighbors but also the staff is key in this. Take walks around the facilities, attend extra events, and be sure the introduce yourself and ask questions! Even go as far to setup an appointment with the staff to go over the care you’ll need and would like to have on a regular basis. These small interactions will make all the difference in happiness at the new home.
So here’s so smooth sailing with your new life adventure in your community!
